Why Simplicity Is Often the Most Difficult Design Choice

October 13, 2026, by Jean Brooks Landscapes

In landscape design, it can be tempting to add more—more plants, more features, more detail. However, simplicity often leads to the most successful outcomes.

Achieving simplicity is not about doing less—it’s about doing only what is necessary, and doing it well.

In towns like Wellesley, Weston, and Lexington, where properties allow for expansive design, the challenge is often resisting the urge to fill every space.

A simple design relies on strong fundamentals: clear structure, thoughtful proportion, and a cohesive material palette. When these elements are in place, the need for additional features diminishes.

Planting is a key area where simplicity can have a significant impact. A restrained palette, used thoughtfully, can create a more cohesive and calming environment than a collection of many different species.

In more compact areas like Boston or Somerville, simplicity becomes even more important. Limited space means that every element must serve a purpose.

Negative space is an essential component of simple design. Areas of lawn, gravel, or open planting allow the eye to rest and give other elements more presence.

Ultimately, simplicity requires confidence. It means trusting that the core design is strong enough to stand on its own.

When done well, a simple landscape feels clear, intentional, and timeless—qualities that are often more difficult to achieve than complexity.
