Designing for Year-Round Interest in New England Landscapes

August 11, 2026, by Jean Brooks Landscapes

A landscape should not peak for just a few months of the year. In New England, where seasonal change is so pronounced, designing for year-round interest is essential.

In towns like Winchester, Belmont, and Arlington, we often approach planting with all four seasons in mind. Early spring structure might come from bulbs and emerging perennials, while summer brings fullness and color.

Fall introduces a different layer of interest through foliage and texture. Winter, often overlooked, can be one of the most visually compelling seasons when structure is emphasized.

Evergreens play an important role in maintaining visual presence during colder months. Their form and color provide contrast against a more muted landscape.

Seed heads, grasses, and branching structures also contribute to winter interest. Rather than cutting everything back, allowing certain elements to remain can create a more dynamic scene.

Material choices support this seasonal variation. Stone, wood, and other natural materials provide consistency as planting changes.

Designing for year-round interest ensures that the landscape remains engaging throughout the year, rather than fading after a single season.
