How to Approach a Landscape Renovation (Without Starting From Scratch)

October 6, 2026, by Jean Brooks Landscapes

Not every landscape project begins with a blank slate. In fact, many of the most successful projects involve working with existing conditions and improving what is already there.

In areas like Newton, Brookline, and Cambridge, properties often have established landscapes that may feel outdated or disconnected, but still contain valuable elements.

The first step is evaluation. Identifying what works—and what doesn’t—helps determine where to focus effort. Mature trees, for example, are often worth preserving, while overgrown or poorly placed shrubs may need to be removed.

Circulation is frequently one of the biggest opportunities for improvement. Updating paths, entrances, and transitions can dramatically change how the space is experienced.

Planting can be reworked to create a more cohesive composition. This might involve reducing the number of plant varieties and focusing on repetition and layering.

In towns like Belmont or Arlington, where space may be more limited, even small changes can have a significant impact.

Materials can also be updated selectively. Rather than replacing everything, introducing a more cohesive palette can unify the space.

The goal is not to erase what exists, but to refine it. By building on existing conditions, a landscape can be transformed without the need for a complete overhaul.
